  5. reduce heat, cook for two minutes more. remove from heat
  6. beat eggs yolks slightly, gradually stir in 1 cup of hot mixture
  7. return egg mixture to saucepan
  8. bring to boil while stirring
  9. cook for two minutes more, remove from heat
  10. stir in butter and vanilla
  11. pour into baked pie crust
  12. allow to cool completely before topping with meringue
  13. FOR THE MERINGUE
  14. in a metal bowl, beat egg whites until soft peaks form
  15. gradually add sugar, beat until stiff peaks form
  16. top cooled pie with meringue and sprinkle on grated chocolate
  17. bake in oven at 350°F for 8- 12 minutes, until top is golden.
