Instructions to make Kerala Special Kanji Payar:
  1. Preparing kanji: Wash the rice and pressure cook it for 12 to 13 whistles in pressure cooker.
  2. Preparing payar thoran: Pressure cook the mung been for 6 whistles.
  3. Heat coconut oil in a pan/cheenachatti. Add mustard seeds, urad dal.
  4. When mustard seeds splutter, add curry leaves, green chilli and small onion. Fry till onion is transparent.
  5. Add Cooked green gram, turmeric powder and salt. Mix well.
  6. Add grated coconut and cook for 2-3 mins. Switch off the flame.
  7. Serving Kanji: In a bowl/plate take kanji. Add some ghee and salt into the kanji. Enjoy this kanji with papad/pappadam, green gram/payar thoran and thengachammathi/coconut chutney.
